Hollywood star Sean Penn is now in Ukraine: filming a documentary about the war

The Oscar-winning actor is in Ukraine, where he is filming a documentary for Vice about the recent tumultuous events in the country. Yahoo.

American actor and director Sean Penn is back in Kyiv to film a documentary about the Russian invasion, the Ukrainian presidential administration announced on February 24. Previously, Penn visited Ukraine and met with military personnel in November 2021.

“The director came to Kyiv specifically to film all the events taking place in Ukraine, and as a documentary filmmaker to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country,” the Ukrainian-language post on the Facebook page of the president’s office reads.

He appeared on February 25 at a government press briefing in Kyiv before making his announcement.

He said: “This is already a cruel mistake of taking lives and breaking hearts, I believe that Putin made the most terrible mistake for all of humanity. President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people have become historical symbols of courage and integrity. Ukraine is the spearhead of democratic dreams. If we let them fight alone, our soul of America will be lost."

It was previously reported that Penn was visiting government officials in the city. The president's office released its own statement praising his efforts and thanking him for traveling to Ukraine "to tell the world the truth about Russia's invasion of our country."

Penn has been working since late last year on his documentary, which is being produced by Vice Studios in association with Vice World News and Endeavor Content.

Penn has long combined his film career with political and humanitarian activities. In 2005, he was filmed on a boat helping to rescue victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. He is also highly regarded in Haiti, where he founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization, camping for 55 earthquake victims on the island in 000, and later founded the non-profit Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) to distribute humanitarian aid and, most recently, , free tests for COVID-2010.

He has long been an active political activist, receiving the 2006 Christopher Reeve First Amendment Award for his commitment to free speech. He has previously criticized President George W. Bush for military strikes against Iraq and made headlines by visiting Iran, Cuba and Pakistan. He has also generated controversy by supporting Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and by siding with Argentina in its ongoing dispute with Britain over ownership of the Falklands. In 2016, he secured an interview with Mexican fugitive Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán before his arrest.

Penn has appeared in more than 50 films over his long career, earning two Academy Awards for acting, first for Mystery River in 2003 and then playing gay activist Harvey Milk in Milk in 2008.
