US residents are asked not to kiss their pets because of the salmonellosis epidemic
The government warned Americans not to kiss their hedgehog pets and not cuddle up to them after an outbreak of salmonellosis in the US was associated with these cute little animals.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, this week 11 people in eight states suffered from an outbreak of salmonellosis, 10 of whom recently had contact with hedgehogs, writes New York Post.
This infection infected three people in Missouri and two in Minnesota.
According to the CDC, in Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, Mississippi, and Maine, one case has been reported.
The agency stated that at the moment it is not known what source the hedgehogs infected with Salmonella came from the owners.
In response to the outbreak of the disease, the CDC gave the owners safety tips that will be useful to anyone who has a hedgehog: do not kiss, pull to yourself or keep small pets next to your face.
