Hid 45 years: a Missouri resident found in his mother's freezer a children's corpse

It was a tiny girl in a pink blanket, hidden in a box and frozen over 45 years ago. After the death of his mother, a Missouri resident decided to dismantle the refrigerator in her house and discovered the well-preserved dead body of a child in the freezer. The man assumes that the girl is his older sister who died before he was born.

Adam Smith discovered a baby in a box that his mother kept in the fridge for as long as he can remember, writes USA Today.

“She was mummified, she still had skin, hair and everything,” he told reporters. “After that I got scared, put the body in a box and immediately called the police.”

His mother lived in an apartment in St. Louis for over 20 years and died last week from lung cancer. Until last Sunday, it never occurred to him to look into the box.

37-year-old Smith admitted that his mother had said all her life that the top of a wedding cake lay in a box. He describes his mother as a secretive woman, and after her death he decided to open the box out of sheer curiosity. The man thought that inside the packaging for the cake could be hidden her cash savings.

But instead of money, he found a girl wrapped in a pink fleece blanket.

“I’m confused and angry,” he admitted. “I want to find more answers.”

The police are investigating this case as a suspicious death: to determine exactly how the child died, an autopsy will be performed.

Every time his mother moved from an apartment to an apartment, she took this box with her, Smith recalls. The packaging took up a quarter of every freezer they had.

According to Smith, his mother once revealed that he had a sister who died before he was born. When he was 7 or 8 years old, he asked his mother why she was sad during a car ride. The woman responded that her oldest child “would have turned 21 today” and “her name was Jennifer.”

After interrogation, Smith provided the police with a sample of his DNA. According to him, he was afraid to continue cleaning due to other possible surprises.

“I picked up the sock and felt something in it,” the man said. “But they were just cigarettes that she was hiding from me.”

Edition New York Post reports more details. Smith said that several times in his life, his mother asked about the contents of the box, but each time she left the answer or exploded, so he stopped questioning. Shortly before his mother died, he moved in with her to help during a serious illness.

“We're talking about 46 or 47 years—that's how long it is. I guess it’s my sister who’s been in a box in the freezer all this time,” the man said.
