Russian intelligence chief on Skripals poisoning and 'US attempts to rule the world'

Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of Russia Sergey Naryshkin in an exclusive interview with a journalist with the BBC Steve Rosenberg said that the United States is trying to rule the world, and Russia defends its national interests, including when it upholds the truth about the events of World War II.

For the first time in modern history, Western media journalists were allowed into the headquarters of the Foreign Intelligence Service, where the conversation took place.

Naryshkin said why, in his opinion, the tension between Russia and the West is growing.

“Some politicians in the West, in my opinion, have unreasonable expectations. They felt that the world could be ruled from one center. This center is called Washington. Everyone needs to remember this, including politicians who are on the other side of the Atlantic,” Naryshkin said.

He also said that Russia’s accusations of conducting a coronavirus disinformation campaign are not true.

“Is it disinformation that the factual data that Russia sincerely volunteered to help Italy in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and sent several dozen or even hundreds of military doctors and a large amount of equipment to this country, a friendly country with us? What is the misinformation here? - said the head of the SVR.

The West may be experiencing a lack of confidence in Russia at the moment, if you look at some recent events, such as the poisoning in Salisbury. Britain believes that Russia is behind this, Naryshkin assures that there is a lack of trust on both sides.

“Trust is lacking on both sides. We have no confidence in the words of British government officials. The expression “highly likely” does not convince us of anything. And if we talk about trust, of course, we very much, I would say, regret that trust is reduced as a result of actions like what is happening today. Here are the latest political developments: the United States of America has announced its withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty. After all, this agreement is an essential part of what we now call trust. Well, is it possible to destroy this agreement? - says Naryshkin. — Russia, like any other truly sovereign state, protects its national interests. National interests are both the present and the future, but they are also the past. The victory was paid at a very high price, at the cost of more than 27 million lives of my compatriots. Many young people in Western and now Eastern European countries sincerely believe that the United States defeated Hitler's Germany, defeated Nazism and liberated Europe. And you know, such ignorance is not brought up by chance, but deliberately, so that there is such an idea that everything good in the past and in the present is connected with one country - the United States of America.”
