Immigration ban: green card lottery winners ask the White House for help

The winners of the DV-2020 green card lottery, who lost their chances of immigration due to the federal ban, filed a petition with the White House - the text of the appeal was published on the official website.

Recall that on April 22, 2020, US authorities first suspended immigration to the United States for 60 days. US President Donald Trump justified this decision by the fact that it will lead to the restoration of the US labor market. On June 22, the ban was extended until December 31, 2020.

Worst of all in this situation was the winners of the DV-2020 lottery, who have not yet been assigned an interview at the US Consulate. Most likely, they will not be able to successfully complete the process of issuing a green card in a statutory time frame.

According to US law, immigrant visas to the winners of this lottery can only be issued until the end of the 2020 tax year - that is, until September 30, 2020. Due to the extension of the immigration ban, this will not be possible.

Lottery winners turned to the White House with petition. Here is her text:

“We are the winners of DV-2020. The most vulnerable category of people affected by the immigration ban since June 22.

Please consider COVID-19 as a force majeure situation and extend the time to work with our affairs or exclude us from the immigration ban declaration, which will be consistent with the law, will be fair for lottery participants and will demonstrate a humane attitude to potential U.S. residents.

Mr. President is limiting the issuance of new immigrant visas until the end of the year. The DV-2020 expires on September 30th. We have put in a lot of effort this year. Many of us have already paid the necessary fees. All this proves that we meet all the requirements of the program and can become honest and worthy citizens of the United States. Please extend our review dates to next year or exclude us from the declaration.”

According to the conditions for considering petitions described on the White House website, the message will be considered after it is signed by 100 thousand people within 30 days.
