Ice skating is a lot of fun. But it can be dangerous if you decide to use naturally frozen bodies of water instead of an ice skating rink for such entertainment. Ice formed in natural conditions is never 100% safe. There may be different types of hidden dangers waiting for you on it, so you should be prepared for this.

Edition AccuWeather collected a few tips on how to recognize dangerous ice, which should not go.

Ice view

If water, cracks or holes are noticeable on the surface of the ice; it can be seen that in a certain place the ice was damaged, melted, and then froze again, in no case do not go on such ice, it can be very unreliable, and you risk falling into very cold water at any time.

Ice color

Blue and clear ice is the safest.

The gray and blackish color of the ice becomes during melting, so this ice is unsafe.

White opaque ice, most likely, has many holes and is very thin, so it is better not to go on it.

Ice thickness

If the ice thickness is less than 10 cm, do not even try to go on it - it is too risky. Even if the ice thickness exceeds this value, there are still risks, so be careful.

Ice strength

Frozen fresh water is stronger than salt water in a frozen state, so if you want to ride on a frozen sea, ocean or a salt lake, make sure that the ice is thick.

If there is snow on the surface of the ice, it warms the ice and accelerates its melting, so you should be very careful going to the ice covered with snow.
