'I'm a big fan of yours': Senate unveils Trump's letters to Putin

Several years before becoming president, Donald Trump wrote several letters to Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling himself a “big fan” of the Russian leader and inviting him to be the guest of honor at the Miss Universe pageant.
On Tuesday, August 18, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a series of letters as part of its report on Russia's attempts to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Among them is a letter in which Trump congratulated Putin on the fact that Time magazine named him "Person of the Year" in 2007.
“Congratulations on being named Time Magazine's Person of the Year - you definitely deserve it. As you may have heard, I'm a big fan of yours!” - Trump wrote.
In the second message, from 2013, Trump tries to persuade Putin to attend the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow, an event run and owned by Trump. The future US president stressed that this competition would be “a great tribute to Moscow and Russia” and said that his team rejected “many competing countries in favor of Russia.”

He then asked Putin to attend the event as his "guest of honor" and, for unspecified reasons, offered to hold a private meeting with the Russian president a few days before the competition.
The typed letter contained a handwritten message from Trump, handwritten in capital letters: "THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN IN THE WORLD!"
The letter is dated June 26, 2013. On June 18, 2013, Trump tweeted: “Do you think Putin will go to the Miss Universe pageant in November in Moscow? If so, will he be my new best friend? "
According to a Senate report, Putin did not attend the competition but dispatched a senior Kremlin official in his place.
Putin responded to the letter by attaching a decorative lacquered box to it.
The unofficial translation of the letter enclosed in the package read: “Dear Mr. Trump, I would like to congratulate you and your colleagues on the successful holding of the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. I hope that all participants in this significant event will go home with good memories of their visit to the Russian capital. It is a pity that we were not able to hold our meeting, but I hope that we can talk during one of your visits to Russia. Yours sincerely, V. Putin. "
Shortly thereafter, Trump and his Russian partner, Emin Agalarov, began discussing the possibility of setting up a real estate joint venture in Moscow.

This document was contained in the fifth and most likely final report, spanning nearly 1000 pages, on Russian election interference.
It concluded that contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia in 2016 “posed a significant counterintelligence threat,” and detailed contacts between Trump employees and Russian agents, including one Kremlin spy.
When asked about the report, Trump replied that he "did not read it."
