'I am ready for everything': key moments of the inaugural speech of Vladimir Zelensky

Today, May 20, the elected President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky made an inaugural speech in the Verkhovna Rada. This happened immediately after he was presented with symbols of power - the official seal, chain and presidential certificate.

“Each of us is a president. This is not mine, this is our common victory. And I was not the only one who took the oath. Each of us has just sworn allegiance to Ukraine,” this is how the new leader and commander-in-chief of the country began his speech.

As noted by Strana.ua, in his speech, he said that he was ready to give citizenship to people born in Ukraine, his first task was to end the war in the Donbas, as well as dissolve the Verkhovna Rada.

“We really need you. I will gladly give Ukrainian citizenship to everyone who is ready to build a successful country,” Zelensky said, noting that there are 65 million Ukrainians in the world.

Termination of the war in the Donbass

“Our most important task is to stop the fire in Donbass,” these words of the president caused a storm of applause in the hall.

“To ensure that our heroes don’t die anymore, I’m ready to do anything. I'm definitely not afraid to make difficult decisions. And if necessary, I am ready to lose my position so that peace can come. Without losing our territories. Never".

“We didn’t start this war. But we have to end this war,” after which Zelensky switched to Russian and added: “The main task for starting a dialogue should be the return of all Ukrainian hostages.”

“Dear deputies! “I ask you very much to pass a law on lifting parliamentary immunity, on criminal liability for illegal enrichment, the long-suffering electoral code, and also to dismiss the head of the SBU, the Minister of Defense, and the Prosecutor General of Ukraine,” Zelensky addressed parliamentarians.

“You will have two months for this,” added the President of Ukraine. “I dissolve the Verkhovna Rada of the eighth convocation.”

In his address, Zelensky also asked officials not to hang his portraits in his offices.

“I really want there to be no photographs of me in your offices. There were no portraits of me, please. Because the president is not an icon, not an idol, the president is not a portrait. Hang photos of your children there, and look them in the eyes before every decision,” the President of Ukraine said.

Thus, after the official initiation procedure, Vladimir Zelensky became the sixth president of Ukraine. He also took command, taking the duties of commander in chief.
