You won the green card: why sending an DS-260 questionnaire early can ruin everything

7 May The results of the DV-2020 Green Card Lottery have become known.. The first impulse of the winner is to send their DS260 forms as soon as possible. This is done with the best intentions, but it can play a cruel joke on you. We explain why in most cases you should not send applications for at least several months after winning a green card.

According to the expert on the lottery of green cards Brit Simon in his blog BritSimonSays.com, this year there are very large numbers of applicants out of all the regions admitted to the drawing - which means that it is quite possible that there will be too many of them. However, there are only 50 visas available.

It is a completely normal situation when more winners are selected than the number of visas that will be issued as a result - quite often the matter does not go beyond the actual winnings. But in the best case, no more than 90 or at least no more than 000 applications will be selected. Although in previous years it happened that the Consular Center selected 100 and even 000 applications. If this happens again in the coming year, it is inevitable that some of the winning bidders will simply not be given an interview - they will not be given an interview.

Candidate country and region numbers will appear on one of the next three Visa Bulletins. One of them will be released this week, the rest around the same time in the coming months. One of these ballots will give you the all-important number - the member number. From this it will be possible to determine how many applicants have been selected this year and when they will be able to complete their interviews.

Until then, the expert strongly recommends do not send DS260 profilesexcept those whose ordinal number is very low. Why? Here are some good reasons:

• Early submission of the DS260 questionnaire will not speed things up. You will not be able to pass an interview before the turn comes up. It will be just that and nothing else.
• Most people do not read the instructions and do not try to understand the procedure, so they will be in a hurry. After some time, they will realize that they have made a mistake, and this can spoil everything.
• Submitting a DS260 questionnaire is a serious task. After you submit it, you will have to indicate everywhere that you have submitted an application and are going to emigrate to the USA. This may make it difficult to obtain nonimmigrant visas in the future—it won't rule out the possibility, but it won't be easy.

And even if your number low and the queue can reach you relatively quickly, the expert recommends waiting at least a couple of months, and then filling out and sending the questionnaire. Waiting will not do you any harm, unlike haste, and may save you from serious mistakes later.

What does a “low” number mean by region of the world:

• Regions EU and AF (Europe and Africa) - up to 15
• Region AS (Isiah) - up to 5000
• Regions SA and OC (South America and Oceania) - up to 500.

Numbers that exceed this value will probably not even be included in the list of admitted to interviews in 2019, and will be able to pass them only in 2020. So where to rush?
