The second time in a week: the US intercepted two groups of Russian bombers from Alaska

American military aviation intercepted two systems of Russian bombers entering the air defense identification zone off the coast of Alaska on the evening of Tuesday, June 16, which became second incident in the past week.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported on Wednesday, June 17, that the first system consisted of two bombers, which were accompanied by two fighters and an aircraft equipped with an early warning and control radar system.

The second system consisted of two Russian bombers, accompanied by another aircraft with a long-range radar detection and control system. Russian aircraft approached the coast of Alaska at a distance of 60 kilometers, but remained in international airspace without violating US sovereign airspace.

“We are talking about significant Russian forces in many places,” said a spokesman for the US military, commenting on the intercepts.

According to the US, some Russian flights are regular training missions. But the intensity of such activity, perhaps, suggests that Moscow wants to make it clear that it intends to keep up with American flights off the Russian coastal regions, a Pentagon official said.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported on Twitter that the bombers "completed a planned 11-hour flight over the neutral waters of the Chukchi, Bering, Okhotsk Seas and the North Pacific."
