The second person in a week: in Florida, alligators eat people

For the second time this week, alligators ate a human body in Florida.

The first case occurred last week in Polk County. The victim was 45-year-old Michael Ford. When a police officer discovered his body, most of it was already in the alligator's mouth. By the time the first rescuers arrived, the gator swam away, reports Fox News.

Employees of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission caught and killed the alligator to conduct an autopsy.

The sheriff's office said that they found a hand and a leg in the alligator's belly. An autopsy on the victim showed other lacerations and injuries caused by the reptile. The preliminary cause of death for a man is drowning, but this version will be confirmed by toxicology results.

It is still unclear whether the alligator attacked a person when he was alive, or collided with him after his death.

Officer Ashley Thayer said that the alligator was almost 12 feet (3,6 m) long and weighed about 450 pounds (200 kg).

“It’s definitely a big gator,” Thayer said.

The last victim was 16-year-old Jarvis Deliford, whose heavily decomposed body was attacked by a dozen alligators in St. Petesberg Lake on July 4.

Residents of St. Petersburg Otis Crawford and his girlfriend, Patricia Case, said they saw alligators around 10 pulling the body into the water. The couple at this time had breakfast by the lake.

“I saw an alligator tear off a piece [of the body], tossed it into the air, caught it and ate it. After that I had to go back to the car. I could not look at it, ”recalls Case.

At the time of writing, the police were still investigating the incident, but did not call it an alligator attack.

“At present, we cannot call this an alligator attack simply because alligators were around the body when we found it, and this made access to it a little difficult,” police said.
