Soon for flights to the USA you will need a Real ID: in what cases can you do without it

Within a year, starting October 1, 2020, Real ID will be required to pass through security checkpoints at American airports. It is advisable to receive it during this time, without delaying it until the last weeks. But it is not necessary for everyone to issue a certificate - there will be exceptions to the rule.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advised travelers not to wait until the last minute to get a so-called Real ID, an enhanced version of the standard driver's license required by Congress since 2005 - after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, recalls USA Today.

Real ID is available in all states except Oregon, Oklahoma and New Jersey. It is recommended that you contact a vehicle management agency in your state to find out where to obtain a new license.

Beginning on October 1 2020, travelers who do not have a valid ID or an acceptable alternative form of identification will not be able to go through any airport checkpoints.

“This is an important step in enhancing the security of commercial aviation, and we urge travelers to ensure they have the appropriate documentation,” said Kevin McAleenan, acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, under which the TSA operates.

But not everyone needs a Real ID. Those who do not plan to fly after 30 on September 2020 can continue to use their current driver’s license until they expire. Passengers with a valid U.S. passport or U.S. passport card, military ID, DHS Global Entry card, permanent resident card or passport issued by a foreign government will be admitted to the aircraft.

Most Real ID-compatible cards are marked with an asterisk at the top of the card.

However, not all compatible credentials have a star. The states of Washington, New York, Minnesota and Vermont issue extended certificates that TSA will accept for Real ID.

Real ID can only be used for domestic travel. International travelers, including those flying to Canada and Mexico, will still require a valid US passport.
