Military assistance to Ukraine and the special operation in the Black Sea: the US Senate will consider the anti-Russian resolution

The US Senate presented a resolution calling for increased defense assistance to Ukraine and supported the cancellation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, the press service of the Ukrainian Embassy in the US reported.

«In a document put on the agenda of the current Congress by a group of nearly seven dozen senators from the Republican and Democratic parties, legislators strongly urge the US President to use the provisions of the law on the “US Budget for National Defense for 2018” to strengthen the potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and providing, through appropriate State Department and Pentagon programs, additional security policy and support to our country, especially to strengthen Ukraine's maritime capabilities to prevent and repel further Russian aggression,” the statement said.

The Senate called on the US President to immediately conduct a joint operation with American allies to ensure freedom of navigation in the Black Sea in order to demonstrate support for internationally recognized borders, bilateral agreements and the principle of safe passage of the Kerch Strait and the Sea of ​​Azov.

In addition, the senators appealed to NATO to strengthen the presence and capabilities of the Alliance in the Black Sea, including on monitoring the situation at sea and coastal defense. Separately, lawmakers urge allies and partners in Europe to refuse Russian Navy ships to call at their ports to replenish stocks and refuel.

The resolution notes that the sanctions against Russia, which are the direct result of the actions of the government of the country, will continue to operate and strengthen until the behavior of Russia properly changes.

Senators also welcomed and supported the resolution of the European Parliament on December 12 2018, condemning Russian aggression in the Kerch Strait and are calling for the cancellation of Nord Stream 2 due to its threat to European energy security.

Let us note that at that time the Americans themselves did not stand aside. On December 11, the US House of Representatives also advocated imposing sanctions against Nord Stream 2. In the adopted resolution, the United States calls on EU countries to abandon the construction of the Russian gas pipeline, and also wants sanctions against this project under the CAATSA law (Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions).

In addition, the United States adopted a resolution on Russian aggression in the Kerch Strait, which calls on Russia to return Ukraine captured sailors and ships, stop blocking shipping to and from Ukrainian ports through the Kerch Strait. They also expressed their commitment to helping Ukraine, both military and political-economic.
