During the search for the child, the police discovered a hangout with starving children.
Police in the US state of New Mexico conducted a raid, in which they managed to rescue 11 children and three women suffering from exhaustion, who were armed to the teeth of men locked up in a camp in a remote area of the desert.
The children - aged from one to 15 years - had no shoes, were dressed in rags and looked like refugees from third world countries, emaciated from malnutrition, reports Air Force
Five adults were also found at the scene, including two armed men.
The police organized the raid after receiving a message with the words “We are starving, we need food and water.”
It remains unclear how exactly the children ended up in this place, which resembles an improvised military camp with a fortification of automobile tires, a shooting range and an underground tunnel. According to police, there is no running water or electricity in the area, and a small plastic covered trailer was used for housing.
The sheriff of Taos County Jerry Hogref told the ABC correspondent that the children were hungry, suffering from thirst and dirt.
“I've been a police officer for 30 years and I've never seen anything like this. They were emaciated, with protruding ribs, and very scared; there was complete unsanitary conditions around them.”
There was no fresh water in the camp, and only food and a bag of rice were found there, a policeman said.
During the raid, police arrested two armed men, Siraj Wahaj and Lucas Morten.
Three women were also discovered and detained in the camp, who were later released - presumably these are the mothers of the children found.
According to Sheriff Hogrefe, the women and children were brainwashed and intimidated by the men who ran the camp. Now the children have been handed over to local social care authorities.
One of those arrested, Sirazh Vahazh, was wanted on suspicion of kidnapping his three-year-old son, but so far it has not been possible to find the boy. Now the police are checking the connection of Vahaj with the found children.
Officials say that the camp could be a training base for extremists. Residents of the nearby town of Amalia, seriously concerned about the safety of their own children, admit that we can talk about some kind of totalitarian sect.
