How much does 25 cost millions of illegal migrants to America

On Sunday, Donald Trump said that the United States had already spent 19 billions of dollars on expenses related to illegal immigration in 2019, and called ridiculous the fact that millions of immigrants live in the country illegally.

In his twitter, the US president said that about 26 million immigrants live in the country, which casts doubt on the more frequently mentioned figure in 11 million, writes The Hill.

“It's not even February and the cost of illegal immigration this year is already $18. Costs on Friday totaled $959. There are at least 495 illegal migrants in our country, not the 168 million that have been talked about for several years. It’s just ridiculous!”

The president indicated in his Tweet an abbreviation of the DNS (Department of Homeland Security), but did not provide the source of the figures he shared. The ministry has not yet commented on the data.

Asked about the tweet on CBS's "Face the Nation," acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney defended the president's broader view of the need for improved border security.

“I'm not entirely sure where the president got that number from this morning, but I think you see what he's trying to do is point out how stupid this debate is,” Mulvaney said. “It’s not a lot of money in the grand scale of what’s going on.”

“I think he was trying to draw attention to the fact that - with the Democrats sitting here rooted to the spot ... - we spend so much money on other things,” he added. "It's really quite absurd."

Numerous media outlets in recent months have disputed Trump’s claims about illegal immigration costs.

The Washington Post notes that the president has steadily increased estimated annual expenditures: in the election campaign in 2015, he talked about 130 billions of dollars, in December 2018 of the year he tweeted 200 more than billion dollars, and last month at one of the events in The White House announced the amount in 275 billions of dollars a year.

NBC News reported that many have questioned the figures provided by Trump.

According to estimates by the Heritage Foundation's conservative foundation, in 2013, the real cost of spending was approximately 54 billion dollars per year, while in 2017, the Cato Institute suggested that this figure was 15,6 billion dollars per year.

News agencies also questioned the president’s statements about the number of people illegally residing in the United States.

Last month, the Associated Press reported that, although Trump claimed there were 30 millions of illegal immigrants in the country, according to the most recent data from the Pew research center, this figure was 11,3 million for 2016 a year.

Mulvaney argued on "Face the Nation" that the 11 million figure was accurate "a couple of years ago" but "the number of people crossing the border every month means that figure could be as high as 30 or 40 million."

Trump's morning tweet was one of several reports in recent days in which the president expressed concern about illegal immigration as he continues to seek funding for the wall along the southern border. On Friday, Trump signed the law on the temporary reopening of the government after he provoked the 35 day standoff due to the requirement to give 5,7 a billion dollars to build the border wall.
