Dumplings conquer America: 5 of the best restaurants of Ukrainian cuisine in the USA

Ukrainian cuisine has conquered many countries, and it has not bypassed the United States. Many Ukrainian restaurants have already received the status of the best throughout the country. Journalists "Voices of America" visited 5 of the most authentic and interesting restaurants of Ukrainian cuisine and learned their success story.

1. Veselka: Ukrainian restaurant has become a cult in New York

For 63 years of existence, Veselka restaurant made New York fall in love with ukrainian cuisine. Movie episodes are filmed here, American celebrities dine here, and on weekends there are queues of people wanting to try Ukrainian dishes.

This year, Veselka was named the third best 24-hour restaurant in America according to the online publication The Daily Meal.

Journalists of Voice of America talked with the owner of the establishment and found out how he managed to maintain the authenticity of the menu over the years and what is the secret to the popularity of Ukrainian food in New York.

2. Riel: a famous Texas chef puts Ukrainian cuisine back on the culinary map of the world

Dumplings with steak, beet chips, an alcoholic cocktail “Borscht with sourness” - all these unusual culinary combinations can be tried at the Ukrainian-French restaurant Riel in one of the largest cities in Texas, Houston. And they were invented by a Canadian of Ukrainian origin, a former professional hockey player, Ryan Lachein.

Recently, Lachain entered the 20 list of the best cooks in North America according to one of the leading culinary magazines, and Riel was named the best new restaurant of the year.

3. “Stricha”: the kitchen at the Ukrainian Church turned into a popular restaurant in New York

To get a taste of Ukraine, New York foodies come to a modest basement space in the so-called Ukrainian Village in Manhattan. For more than 40 years, at the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church of St. George there has been a kitchen under the laconic name “Stricha”. Only traditional Ukrainian dishes are prepared here, and the money they earn supports the church. Not everyone knows about the existence of this unique place, because even the name of the restaurant is written in Cyrillic, which is incomprehensible to Americans. Voice of America journalists found out what attracts locals to Stritch.

4. Pierogie Kitchen: Philadelphia Delighted With Dumplings Family Recipe

Marie Thorpe, whose grandfather was a Ukrainian, 16 opened the Pierogie Kitchen dumplings years ago in Philadelphia (PA). The woman wanted to maintain a culture that was beginning to disappear in the region.

Voice of America journalists visited Varenichnaya on the eve of the American Football Super Bowl, the largest sporting event of the year.

5. Enoteca Maria: in a New York restaurant, a Ukrainian hostess feeds Americans with dumplings according to a family recipe

A small restaurant in New York gained worldwide fame only because it refused the services of professional chefs in favor of ordinary grandmothers. At first - only Italian ones, and since last year - housewives from different parts of the world. For all the dishes prepared by nonnas (as grandmothers are called in Italian), the owner has only one requirement - that the recipes be authentic.

Recently, the first nonna from Ukraine started working at the restaurant. Voice of America journalists met the Ukrainian owner and found out what she feeds the Americans.
