In Utah, a dog bit off and ate an 4-year-old boy's hand

An 4-year-old boy from Leighton, Utah, put his hand under the fence, trying to play with the dog on the other side of the fence. The animal bit off and ate his hand and part of the hand above the wrist.

According to the fire battalion chief Leyton Jason Cook, the boy put a sock on his hand and stuck it in a small gap between the ground and the fence. Everything happened in the backyard of his house 3 March, writes Time. Cook reported that a husky dog ​​bites off the entire child’s wrist and 2-3 inches (5-7,5 cm) of his hand above the wrist.

The boy's father tried to stop the bleeding and calm the child while the family waited for the rescuers. The child was taken by helicopter to the Salt Lake City Hospital, where he was operated on. Officials say that the life of the victim is not in danger and his speedy recovery is expected.

Rescuers were unable to find the child's hand - they are almost sure that the dog chewed it and swallowed it. Medics and animal control officials initially considered euthanizing the dog to remove the arm and try to reattach it, but the surgeon decided that was not a realistic option.

The dog survived and was quarantined for 10 days. It is not yet known whether this animal will be added to the list of dangerous dogs; a more detailed investigation into the incident is currently underway. Those who care about the future fate of the dogs are spreading an online petition.

It is known that the petition to rescue the dog at the time of writing the note collected 26 900 signatures, writes Fox News. The woman who created the petition, Jessica Nush, said that her best friend's dog had become involved in an “accident.”

Cook said this was the first recorded bite from the animal. It is unknown whether the dog's owners will be held responsible for the incident. The animals were kept behind proper fencing on the property, Cook said. The fire battalion chief believes it was an "unfortunate turn of events" but the boy's young age will help him fully recover from what happened.
