USCIS announced a large-scale delay in the issuance of green cards and work permits
The massive delay in the production of green cards and other documents, including work permits, is due to budget problems of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), reports CNN.
According to a July 22 warning by the agency's ombudsman, the continued backlog in the production of green cards and other documents was caused by budgetary problems and the suspension of hiring at USCIS, which deals with legal immigration benefits.
In June, the USCIS reduced its ability to print documents such as green cards and work authorization documents when it terminated a contract with an outside company.
The agency had planned to hire federal employees to carry out these functions, but the budget deficit has resulted in a hiring freeze and a slowdown in card printing, the warning said.
“Currently, card processing facilities have limited production,” a USCIS spokesman said, adding that the agency now produces about 10 cards per day.
The Washington Post previously reported that the administration reduced the printing of these documents without notifying Congress.
The current backlog in production is roughly 115 green cards and work permit documents, with the oldest order pending July 000, according to a USCIS spokesman.
On the subject: How can immigrants benefit from delays in USCIS?
USCIS is preparing to lay off more than half of its employees next month, a move that could bring the US immigration system to a standstill. The fee-funded agency says USCIS is in a financial hole after having to close offices and suspend services during the pandemic.
The agency asked Congress for $ 1,2 billion.
“If USCIS personnel are laid off on August 3, 2020, card production delays will likely increase,” the ombudsman said in a statement.
Legal permanent residents awaiting card issuance can obtain confirmation of their status by requesting timestamps on valid passports, according to the USCIS ombudsman.
