In the United States banned state institutions to recognize the annexation of the Crimea

The House of Representatives approved this bill, which was sent back for review in January 2018.

On Thursday, March 7, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives unanimously approved a draft law that prohibits the Washington administration and all government agencies from recognizing the annexation of Crimea by Russia. “By unanimous decision, the initiatives were sent with amendments to them for consideration by the full House of Representatives,” the press service noted.

The text of the “Law on non-recognition of the annexation of Crimea” is short, but consists of the main predetermining sentences.

“Prohibit the US government from recognizing the annexation of Crimea by Russia. It is the policy of the United States not to recognize, de jure or de facto, the authority of the Russian Federation over Crimea, its airspace, or its territorial waters. It is prohibited to take any action or provide any assistance that must include or imply recognition of the de jure or de facto authority of the Russian Federation over Crimea, its airspace or territorial waters,” the document says. However, the text specifically states that the president is given the right to make exceptions if he “determines that doing so is necessary in the national security interests of the United States.”

If both chambers of Congress approve the initiative, it will be sent for signature to the head of state.

Earlier, the US State Department issued a formal declaration with a harsh statement against the annexation of the Crimea. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made it clear that the United States adheres to its long-standing principle of not recognizing the Kremlin’s claims to territory seized by force, in violation of international law. He urged Russia to respect these principles and end the occupation of the peninsula.
