Restaurants with 'Russian' in their names are being destroyed in the US

For more than a decade, this restaurant of Slavic and Eastern European culture in downtown Austin was called "Russian House", but everything changed on February 27th. As a sign of solidarity with Ukraine, the owner decided to remove the word “Russian” from the name of the restaurant, reports Fox7Austin.

"It's okay to say that what's happening right now is wrong and needs to be stopped," said Varda Monamor, the owner.

From Russia House to Home, Monamore says she is doing this to show solidarity with Ukraine during the recent Russian invasion, adding that she does not support the war.

“For me, this name does not reflect who we really are. If it hurts others, we just feel like it should just be Home,” she said.

She says it's a difficult decision because she's always been proud of her culture, but it's a decision she wanted to make to make everyone feel comfortable during such tragic times.

“I am doing this for the people of Ukraine, because for them now this name is painful. I am doing this for the people of Russia, because there are so many people who do not want this. I'm doing this for the people of Austin because they need to know our position and understand who we really are," she said.

With the last letter removed from the building, Monomor admits it's a bittersweet feeling.

“I will keep the letters. The time will come when the letters will return and we will not be ashamed,” she said.

Until then, she hopes the message gets loud and clear and people know The House is for everyone.

"We just want everyone to come here and be happy and celebrate again and we just say to everyone, 'Hey, welcome to The House.' That's all," she said.

Part of the profits received from Ukrainian dishes, The House will send to support refugees.

And according to the owner of the Russian House restaurant in Washington on northwest Connecticut Avenue, windows were broken in his establishment and the flag was torn down, reports TheWashington Post.

In an interview, restaurant owner Aaron McGovern indicated that he believes the restaurant's vandalism may be related to countering Russia's attack on Ukraine. However, according to him, the restaurant has nothing to do with Russia or the invasion.

“We are an American company trying to survive,” he said. According to him, the restaurant has suspended work due to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to McGovern, the damage to the window occurred late on the evening of February 24 or the morning of February 25. According to him, a stone could have been used.

He said he didn't know who broke the three windows. But in the comments, he indicated that, in his opinion, anti-Russian sentiment could be the cause of the vandalism.

“We get phone calls with messages full of hate,” he said.

He said that "People just shouldn't start destroying property" out of hostility to what they think may be the political views of the owners.

According to him, the restaurant "has nothing to do" with anyone's views on the situation in Ukraine.
