999 copies of Andy Warhol's painting with one original sold in the USA: no one knows who got the real masterpiece

The team of American designers MSCHF organized an unusual lottery called "Museum of Forgeries", writes TJournal.

The bottom line was to sell one original among 999 counterfeits. Thus, Andy Warhol's 1954 work "Fairies" was sold.

The designers purchased the painting for $ 20. The robotic arm then created 999 copies of it. The sheets of paper have aged with heat and moisture. The lottery authors offered to buy one of the thousand paintings for $ 250. The chance of getting the original was only 0,1%.

The main goal of such a lottery, the group of designers called the opportunity to question the importance of the originals. In the manifesto, the authors of the project stated that the owners of the paintings are not concerned with their beauty, but the documents confirming their authenticity. According to them, "the original became just as fake when it was hidden among the copies, like a needle in a haystack."

The entire promotion at MSCHF was called a separate piece of art, and the buyers were called authors. The company believes that they "democratized Warhol's work" and developed his ideas.

“Warhol promoted the mass production of art as if it were ordinary goods. What we have created continues this idea. We have replaced the shortcomings of the human hand with the shortcomings of the robotic one, ”the MSCHF noted.

Andy Warhol (Andrey Vargola) is an American artist of Ukrainian (Lemko) origin, one of the founders of pop art and a cult figure in the history of contemporary art in general. As an artist, illustrator, designer, sculptor, writer, producer, filmmaker, publisher and collector, he has left a tremendous artistic legacy behind him.
