In the US, products continue to rise in price: which goods have undergone inflation the most

Food prices jumped 10,8% in a year.

Recently, food prices have been affected by a number of factors, ranging from bad weather to the war in Ukraine. The weather reduced crop yields, and the Russian invasion raised the price of wheat and other commodities.

Individual products also face problems. Avocado prices soared after the US briefly suspended imports from the western Mexican state of Michoacán in February. Months later, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott requested "heightened security checks" on commercial vehicles entering Texas for a week, slowing overseas deliveries.

And, most importantly, the deadly and highly contagious bird flu forced American farmers to kill millions of laying hens, reducing the supply of eggs in the country and driving up prices. The damage to the egg industry hit consumers hard in April, with egg prices up 10,3% seasonally adjusted. Without these adjustments, egg prices rose 22,6% in the 12 months ending April.

And these are not the only products that have grown significantly this year.

Meat and dairy products have become more expensive. Bacon was 17,7% more expensive and chicken prices were up 16,4%. Butter and margarine together rose in price by 19,2%, while milk prices rose by 14,7% and fresh whole milk by 15,5%.

Prices for flour increased by 14%, and for coffee - by 13,5%. Fruits and vegetables also became much more expensive, with citrus fruit up 18,6% and lettuce up 12,7%. Even canned fruits and vegetables did not stand aside: they went up in price by 10,4%.

Restaurants saw their menu prices rise 7,2% year-on-year as they raised prices to offset their costs.

Still, there is good news on the inflation front.

In general, prices continued to rise last month, but at a slower pace than in previous months. The consumer price index rose 8,3% in the 12 months ended April, slightly higher than economists had forecast.

Here's what's changed at the grocery store in April

Nothing jumped in price as sharply as eggs - up 22,6% in April - but other goods also became more expensive.

Margarine went up by 7,1%, butter - by 3,7%. Milk has risen in price by 3,1%. Instant coffee rose 3,7%, while roasted coffee rose 2,6%. Bacon became more expensive by 2,5%. Dry breakfast rose in price by 2,4%. Even pancakes have risen in price - potatoes have risen in price by 2%.

Some items have become cheaper.

Raw beef steaks fell 2,1% and ham fell 1,8%. And prices for stable-stored fish and seafood fell by 2,5%.
