Colorado health officials on Tuesday, December 29, confirmed the first U.S. case of a new highly infectious strain of coronavirus. which was first discovered in the UK a few weeks ago, which led to the introduction of new strict restrictions. Writes about it Fox News.

A state laboratory has informed the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that a 20-year-old from Elbert County has a new strain. Governor Jared Polis said in a statement that the sick person did not go anywhere and will remain in isolation until doctors allow him to leave.

“The health and safety of state residents is our top priority and we will be monitoring this case closely,” Polis said. “We are working to prevent the spread and contain the virus at all levels.”

Polis said no close contacts have been identified so far with the person, but public health officials are working to find people who could potentially have contact with the sick person. He said his office would be "very closely" monitoring the new case.

The discovery of a new strain, dubbed B.1.1.7, in the UK alarmed officials and led to isolation measures and international travel restrictions in southeast England during the holiday season.

Researchers have identified the new strain in more than a dozen countries, including Japan, Canada and several European countries. Nigeria officials said last week that a new variant appears to have emerged in that country as well.

"There's a lot we don't know about this new variant of COVID-19, but scientists in the United Kingdom are warning the world that it is significantly more contagious," Polis said.

According to experts, the currently approved vaccines are considered effective against the new variant.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has warned the public to take the new strain "very seriously."

“We get isolates of it, create a combination of viruses, and test whether the vaccine helps against the new strain,” Fauci said. “There is a similar, but not quite the same type of mutation that we are seeing in South Africa.”
