In the US, legalized anesthetic, 1000 times stronger than morphine
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new opioid, which is 1000 times more effective than morphine and 10 times stronger than fentanyl. The novelty will be a high-speed alternative to IV anesthetic used in hospitals.
Dsuvia pain medication will be limited in use. It will be available only in medical facilities such as hospitals, surgical centers and emergency departments. But critics are concerned that the opioid will only increase the opioid epidemic.
On Friday, November 3, the Drug Enforcement Administration issued a report that prescription drugs cause a greater number of overdose cases among any illicit drugs from the year 2001.
Democrat Sen. Ed Marky from Massachusetts last month urged the FDA not to approve Dsuvia, saying that "an opioid that is a thousand times stronger than morphine will be a thousand times more interesting for abuse and a thousand times more likely to kill."
At this, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said that for such a strong means there will be severe restrictions.
Gottlieb said Dsuvia will not be available at retail pharmacies or for home use. A medicine that comes in a single-use package should also not be used more often than in 72 hours.
The drug looks like a pill that can dissolve under the tongue. Side effects of a potent drug include severe fatigue, breathing problems, coma, and death.
Gottlieb said that the military use of the drug was “carefully considered in this case,” because the FDA wants to “ensure that our soldiers have access to treatment tools that meet unique needs on the battlefield.”
Recall that frequency of opioid abuse in pregnant women in the US increased more than four times over the 15-year period ending in the 2014 year. And in the administration of US President Donald Trump have prepared a new plan to combat the opioid crisis in the country, which provides for the introduction of the death penalty for some drug traffickers.
