In Russia, a pensioner herself performed an operation without waiting for doctors, reports BBC.

In Vyborg, Leningrad Region, an elderly woman with cancer was unable to receive the necessary medical care due to coronavirus and underwent surgery herself, an ambulance worker said.

The authorities have begun checking.

As ambulance worker Victoria Shutova, a pensioner who survived the war and siege, wrote on her page on VKontakte, she fell ill with oncology, which resulted in complications in the form of ascites.

This is the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity.

According to the author of the post, the pensioner “could not get timely help” due to the situation with coronavirus and decided to try to perform the operation herself to relieve the pain.

“The old woman performs surgery on herself - laparocentesis - to alleviate the condition. That is, he makes cuts with a thin knife along the anterior abdominal wall to remove the fluid,” Shutova said.

The pensioner was not sure whether she would be able to successfully perform the operation on herself, and therefore, just in case, she wrote a suicide note, which Shutova also published.

“Dear and beloved daughter, as well as my beloved grandchildren. If you can, forgive me for my actions, but I can’t live with my illnesses and can’t stand it anymore. It’s very painful and difficult for me,” the note says.

Now the pensioner is in the hospital, said Shutova.

“She has wonderful, very caring relatives, she is fine now, but she really needs decent palliative care,” she writes.

The pensioner is over 90 years old.

The Health Committee of the Leningrad Region reported that the woman had not undergone a planned operation due to problems with the tests.

“She was diagnosed with coronavirus, so surgery had to be postponed. Now the grandmother is receiving all the necessary help. Doctors are trying to alleviate her condition as much as possible.

We are conducting an investigation into this fact,” the committee said.

The chairman of the Hospice at Home charity institution, Ekaterina Ovsyannikova, also wrote on Facebook that the elderly woman performed the operation on her own.

She explained that with ascites, “it is impossible to walk, lie down, or even breathe heavily.”
