“Rescue teams used technology to turn the capsule over. Doctors examined the astronauts, their condition is assessed as satisfactory,” the Central Military District said in a statement.

After that, the crew loaded into a helicopter to be sent to Baikonur. From there, the astronauts will be delivered to the Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City (Moscow Region).

“Alexey Ovchinin and Nick Haig are feeling good. Doctors examined them and there were no health problems. They drink tea and joke,” Roscosmos said.

The rocket launched from the Baikonur launch site on the morning of October 11. The accident occurred in the 119 second after the separation of the side blocks of the first stage from the central unit of the second stage.

The launch was dedicated to the centenary of the Experimental Mechanical Engineering Plant of the Energia rocket and space corporation, the manufacturer of the Soyuz rocket.

Causes of an accident

The cause of the accident has not yet been established. The media, citing sources, report that the accident may be associated with one of the side blocks of the first-stage launch vehicle.

“Perhaps due to poor fastening when separating the second stage blocks, one of them could have caught the central block, which caused an accident,” said an Interfax source in the rocket and space industry.

A RIA Novosti source described the situation as follows: “There are four blocks at the first stage, they are also called side blocks. They work for two minutes. According to preliminary data, one of the blocks in the upper part did not separate and hit the second stage with its lower part. An emergency shutdown of the second stage engine occurred.”

“The accident occurred at 119 seconds of flight when the side blocks of the first stage separated from the central block of the second stage of the launch vehicle. Then the emergency beacon went off, the ship divided into sections and released a parachute,” the Interfax interlocutor said.

All launches of Soyuz launch vehicles, including from Vostochny, Plesetsk and Kuru, may be postponed due to the accident at Baikonur, reported RIA News source in the industry.

“All Soyuz rockets use the same systems for separating the first stage from the second (this is where, according to the source, the problem may lie). Accordingly, all launches are in question,” he said.

Until the end of the year, it was planned to hold three launches from Baikonur, two launches from Kuru, one from East and at least one more - from Plesetsk.

The situation is being investigated by a special commission of Roscosmos. It was the first in the history of modern Russia a spacecraft crash with a crew on board.
