Chocolate factory explodes in Pennsylvania: 6 dead, XNUMX missing

At least five people were killed and six missing in a massive explosion at a chocolate factory in Pennsylvania. The edition told in more detail New York Post.

Shortly before 17 p.m., a massive explosion at the RM Palmer Company plant rocked the city of West Reading, according to local authorities.

Nine people were hospitalized for medical care.

A Reading hospital spokesman said that of the eight patients, one had been transferred to another ward, two were in a satisfactory condition and the rest had been discharged.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but officials have said they believe it may have been the result of a gas leak.

A video posted to social media showed the building exploding violently, sending debris and flames flying into the sky.

Footage of the aftermath showed parts of the building lying in the street as the remains continued to smolder.

“Unfortunately, not much was saved,” said Samantha Kaag, a local firefighter. — In front of the building there is a church and apartments. The explosion was so strong that it moved this building four feet (1,2 m) forward."

No residents were evacuated, but the mayor asked those within one block of the explosion to avoid the area.

Officials said there was no danger to people.

RP Palmer was founded in 1948 and is headquartered in West Reading.

The confectioner, one of the largest in the country, has 850 employees and specializes in holiday treats such as chocolate Easter bunnies.
