In New York, the law against Airbnb was blocked
Federal judge Paul A. Engelmayer in New York blocked the law, which obliged the Airbnb service to provide data on landlords to the authorities, writes RTVi.
This is a law, according to which the service should provide the authorities with detailed information about tens of thousands of landlords, including their names and addresses. It was supposed to take effect in February 2019 of the year.
“The city authorities have not given any arguments in support of the fact that the government's acquisition of personal data of this magnitude <...> is justified,” the judge's ruling says.
Engelmayer noted that the law violates the fourth amendment to the US Constitution, which protects against illegal searches, seizures and detentions.
Airbnb called this decision a "huge victory" for the service and its customers, including "thousands of New Yorkers threatened with illegal surveillance."
In July, 2018, the city council unanimously passed a bill that restricts the work of short-term housing services. According to the authorities, services have turned apartments into illegal hotels and aggravated the problem of housing shortages in New York.
In August, Airbnb and HomeAway’s other rental services filed a lawsuit in which they were asked to declare the law unconstitutional.
Such restrictive measures for the services of short-term rental housing are already in force in other American cities: San Francisco and New Orleans.
