In New York, for plastic bags have to pay extra
Soon in New York stores for plastic bags will have to pay extra 5 cents. This was stated by a group of lawmakers, who scored the required number of votes in the city council to enter the fee for disposable packages.
Council members Democrat Brad Lander, Margaret Chin and Antonio Ruenoso announced the majority vote after a rally outside City Hall that included about 30 schoolchildren and dozens of environmentalists.
According to Brad Lander, research has shown that paying for plastic bags will reduce their use by 60-90 percent. Every year, New Yorkers throw out 9 billions of packets. As a result, the city spends 12,5 millions of dollars on their transportation to landfill.
“Everyone can avoid the fee by using reusable bags,” Lander said.
The Democrat plans to put the bill into effect on April 22, Earth Day.
