An unknown person set fire to a backpack and left it on the steps of a Jewish center in Brooklyn on the night of Wednesday, October 9, the holy holiday of Yom Kippur, the New York police said, writes. New York Post.

Officers from the 78 station answered the call and saw that at about one in the morning, a backpack was burning in front of the front steps of the Jewish Center in Park Slope. FDNY firefighters extinguished the fire.

According to police sources, an unknown man rummaged in a backpack and set it on fire. He escaped from the scene.

New York City police said Tuesday that patrols around synagogues had been intensified ahead of Yom Kippur.

It turned out that on the eve of Yom Kippur, the White Plains Holocaust memorial was desecrated by hateful profanity, adds New York Post.

On Tuesday, October 8, Westchester County police found two glued leaflets with anti-Semitic messages and graphics near the Holocaust Memorial Garden on Martin Avenue.

“This was a purposeful action, not a joke. This was not done negligently,” Westchester County Supervisor George Latimer said during a news conference on hate crimes. “They chose an outrageous place for the incident.” This place is specifically designed to honor the memory of those killed as a result of anti-Semitism.”

It is believed that leaflets that were difficult to remove due to their adhesive backing were placed around the memorial on Monday, October 7. Until Tuesday, this was not known.

Westchester County police did not dare to publish the images of the leaflets, calling the graphics “offensive” and the language “obscene.” When asked if this was a statement of hatred and intentions, Latimer replied that "there is no dispute about this."

Latimer added that other manifestations of vandalism were discovered inside the memorial, but this was not believed to be related to anti-Semitic remarks on leaflets.

The Jewish Memorial was created by the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center to commemorate the victims, according to the website of the county parks department.
