New York is preparing for a snowfall: 15 is expected; see snow and frost to -15.

A powerful winter storm that moves to the Northeast will bring a lot of snow and severe frosts with strong wind to New York, meteorologists warn.

Already from 5 or 6 hours of the morning on Thursday, January 4, in Manhattan will begin snowfall. It is expected that there will fall to 8 cm of snow. In Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island may fall to 15 cm of snow, experts warn. On the roads and sidewalks will be slippery.

Although, as expected, on Thursday the city “warms up” to -2 degrees Celsius, the flow of arctic air already on Friday will reduce the temperature to -8 degrees Celsius. And on Saturday, the thermometer will drop to the mark in -15 degrees Celsius.

The coldest day is registered 6 January 1896 of the year. Then the air temperature dropped to -18,8 degrees Celsius.

“I don’t expect that we will record a new record, but we will definitely get closer to this mark,” the meteorologist said.

Experts said that the abrupt change in winter weather directed to the northeast is called a “bomb cyclone” because the pressure will drop so sharply that it will look like a rapidly gaining storm.

"All Thursday meteorologists will monitor the data of the new satellite GOES-East, watching a truly amazing unscheduled bomb cyclone off the New England coast,” tweeted meteorologist Ryan Mau of Weather.us.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo called on residents and tourists to take precautions due to cold weather.
