In New York, a driving inspector demanded a bribe: he was arrested

A former driving test driver at the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles was arrested. He is accused of taking bribes from female drivers in Queens.

The Office of the State Inspector General charged 35-year-old Jan Chiofi from Nassau County on Tuesday, March 12.

Cioffi refused to accept tests from some women who did not want to pay cash bribes. He also once "groped" a woman.

During a road test in March 2018, Chiofi asked if the woman had the cash. Hearing a negative answer, the inspector stopped the car and said that she would have to pay $ 100 to pass the exam. Then he reduced the cost to $ 20, but the woman still refused to pay. Then he put his hand on her leg and reached down under her clothes.

After stroking, Chiofi told her that the exam had been passed, despite the fact that she had not passed the turn and had parked wrong in the parking lot, prosecutors said afterwards.

An inspector is charged with several counts, including taking bribes, stealing, falsifying business reports and violent touches.

“This defendant used his position of authority to extort and abuse vulnerable New Yorkers while controlling test results,” Inspector General Leticia Tagliafiero said in a statement.

“He violated the public trust by messing up key points on the test every driver must take and denigrated the work of other honest DMV employees who work hard every day to register and license drivers across the state,” she added.
