The Russian “Fool” and the Ukrainian “Tribe” will be shown at MoMA

New Russian and Ukrainian films will be shown to New York viewers as part of 44. film festival “New Directors / New Films festival”, which is held jointly with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Lincoln Center Film Society.
What: "Fool" (The Fool, 2014) - Russian social drama directed by Yuri Bykov. The film is dedicated to Alexei Balabanov. Language: Russian, with English subtitles.
When: Tuesday 19 March at 20: 45 and Saturday 21 March at 21: 15
More: The film takes place in a provincial Russian city. The lives of hundreds of people were in danger. Investigating the maintenance problem in a collapsing provincial dormitory, plumber and engineering student Dmitry Nikitin (Artem Bystrov) discovers two massive cracks along the entire length of the building. Making sure that the building is about to collapse, he rushes to warn the mayor, who meets his warning with skepticism and hostility. Events get out of control for one long night, no one even tries to help Dmitry.
Writer, director and actor Yuri Bykov received four awards for “Fool” at the Locarno Festival in 2014.
Filming took place in Tula and Moscow. For the shooting of a crumbling building, a real hostel was found on the outskirts of Tula.

What: "Tribe" (The Tribe) - The film is an experiment by Ukrainian director Miroslav Slaboshpytsky, a silent film of the 21st century, in which deaf and non-professional actors play.

More: This is a dramatic story of the first love of a deaf Sergey, who goes into the 11 class of a boarding school for children. The plot of the film is based on the relationship of the hero with classmates and the girl Anya.
The idea of "Tribe" was born from the short film directed by Slaboshpitsky "Deafness". The film is based on real events. The shooting took place in boarding schools in Kiev and Kiev region. The author refuses to sound, all the characters use sign language. Twenty deaf characters are not professional actors.
The film received the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in the Critics' Week program, and the prize for the best artistic work of 2014 at the 19th Milan International Film Festival.
