In Connecticut, a buyer found a deadly spider in products
A woman with an 11-year-old son discovered a deadly spider in a package with grapes.
A Branford, Connecticut mom is warning fruit lovers to be vigilant after she found a deadly black widow spider in a bag of grapes she bought at a Stop & Shop grocery store.
She found the spider only a few hours after the purchase. Fortunately, her spider and 11-year-old son did not bite and no one was hurt.
The woman said that when she took the package with the grapes and the spider back to the store, she was offered compensation - double payment of the purchase.
“It makes you worry,” said Laurie Fitzgerald of Branford. “You start to wonder where they import the grapes from.”
NBC News sent a request to Stop & Shop and received the following response:
“Stop & Shop and our grape suppliers are taking the necessary steps to remove spiders from the grapes sold. Despite these efforts, spiders can get caught in the clusters as they are part of their natural organic environment. "
Grapes are supplied by a company from California, which did not comment on the incident at the time of this writing.
