In Kazakhstan, near the city of Taraz, a series of explosions took place in ammunition depots. More than 90 people sought medical help, 28 of them were hospitalized. According to the deputy chief physician of city hospital No. 1, Saken Zhumashev, 93 people were admitted to them (10 of them were civilians).

“Five of the 28 hospitalized are in intensive care: two are in serious but stable condition. Three soldiers and two firefighters are in intensive care,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the warehouse where the explosion took place contained 500 tons of TNT.

The Minister of Defense of Kazakhstan, Nurlan Yermekbayev, announced that he would resign.

“I have already made a decision for myself: I will ask for resignation. And then the head of state will decide,” Yermekbaev said. According to the minister, he made this decision as soon as he heard about the incident.

The first explosion occurred in the evening at about 19:00 local time in military unit No. 28349 (engineering brigade) in the Zhambyl region. In total, at least six (according to other sources - at least ten) ammunition explosions occurred at the warehouse, after which a fire started.

The Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan said that only engineering shells were stored in the warehouse, the explosions of which do not cause the fragments to fly over a large (over 3 kilometers) distance, and the long fire was associated with the burning of TNT.

Local residents began to leave their homes on their own, later the authorities decided on a mass evacuation. About 1,2 thousand people were evacuated from nearby settlements to the regional center of Taraz. There are 171 people in temporary evacuation points. All roads to the scene of the incident, as well as railroad tracks, are closed.

The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, said that a criminal case had been initiated into the incident. Investigators are considering several possible versions of the explosion and fire in the warehouse, including arson.

“The reasons for the incident are being clarified by the created operational investigative group. We do not exclude various reasons, it could be a violation of safety regulations, spontaneous combustion, a chemical reaction, deliberate arson and sabotage cannot be ruled out,” he said.

More than 500 tons of TNT were stored in a warehouse in a military unit. The area of ​​the fire was almost 700 square meters - it covered the entire territory of the warehouse. The fragments scattered over a radius of up to two kilometers.
