Starting in 1 on April 2018, illegal immigrants who live in California and recently obtained a driver’s license legally or received them earlier, hiding their immigration status, can be automatically entered into the voting base.

Since 2015, California has started to issue a driver's license to illegally residing state workers. It is estimated that about a million of them received rights before the end of 2017.

Linda Payne, co-founder of a non-partisan fair election campaign in California, said her organization visited the DMV offices and watched employees process information from undocumented immigrants. She added that after the visit and meetings with government officials, she does not have confidence in the guarantees of preventing illegal voter registration.

“We have thousands and thousands of DMV employees across our vast workforce,” Payne told Fox News. - Not all of them are trained. There are no real protections to prevent non-citizens from being added to the voter rolls.”

In response to an explanation of the new policy, US Secretary of State Sam Maud said in a statement: “As required by federal law, anyone registering to vote at the DMV must prove, under penalty of perjury, that it meets eligibility requirements, including its citizenship. Moreover, in accordance with DMV state law, it is prohibited to send any information to the Secretary of State from persons applying for a driver's license in the state of California.

Some, meanwhile, argue that voter fraud problems are overblown. Katya Feng, executive director of the nonpartisan voting rights group VCR, said she believes the new registration process will open the door to widespread fraud.

“There is a real opportunity [on all sides] to make sure there are clear signals when people fill out the DMV form,” Feng told Fox News. - They are asked if they are 18 years old and if they are US citizens. They don’t move forward with registering voters if they’re not eligible.”

Feng claims that most immigrants will not want to risk a chance to legalize, or people with a green card will undergo a naturalization process.

Feng added that the main goal of the new registration process is to make it easier for those people who are eligible to vote to register.

“There are 5-6 million eligible voters in California who are not registered to vote,” Feng said.
