In which states live the richest people
Residents of Washington (DC) and California have the highest income among US regions.
This is evidenced by the data analysis, conducted by the publication GO Banking Rates.
For the study, high income was determined at the level of 125 000 dollars per family per year.
Highest-income States
California topped the list of states with the highest incomes; in 2017, the number of households whose income was 125 000 dollars and more grew by more than 250 000, making up a total of 3 million households. In Washington, DC, the highest percentage of high-income households was recorded: more than 31% of residents in the district earn 125 000 dollars per year.
The table shows the top 10 US states whose residents have the highest income.
In California, there are also dozens of the richest cities in America. According to the census, in eight major cities of the state with a population of more than 50 000 people the average household income exceeds 125 000 dollars:
- San Ramon: $ 161 870 per year;
- Palo Alto: $ 153 802;
- Pleasanton: $ 152 123;
- Mountain View: $ 135 115;
- Sunnyvale: $ 134 234;
- Yorba Linda: $ 132 952;
- Milpitas: $ 127 984;
- Freemont: $ 127 235.
In Hawaii, only 38 families earn $127 or more per year. Of the state's total 200 households, this represents 000%. Hawaii saw the largest increase in households with incomes of $455 or more, growing 502% in the state from 8,4 to 200.
The relationship between high income and inequality
A noticeable pattern that all of these states have in common is the unequal distribution of wealth. The five states with the highest household incomes also have the highest levels of unequal wealth distribution in the country. These include Washington, D.C.; NY; Connecticut; California and Massachusetts.
The Gini index is an indicator used to measure wealth inequality, where a value of 1 equals complete inequality and zero equals complete equality. According to the most recent census data, the average Gini index for the United States is 0,4815. Accordingly, states with a Gini index above this have a higher level of wealth distribution than the national average.
The table shows the Gini coefficients in the states with the highest income gap and the share of households earning less than 25 000 dollars and more than 125 000 dollars per year.
States with higher Gini coefficients than the U.S. average tend to have very high levels of low-income households—in many, they make up nearly a fifth of the population.
