Chicago package tax imposed
Starting January 1, 2017, all stores in Chicago, Illinois, will have a bag tax of 7 cents per item (5 of which will go to the state budget, 2 to the store).
This is done in order to reduce the consumption of packages and their release into the environment, writes Chicago Tribune.
Currently, state shops and state authorities agree to administer a new tax.
Experts note that such measures are very effective in reducing the consumption of packages, but the revenue from them to the budget is very small. At the same time, some experts argue that this is a short-term effect - after a few months, people get used to the tax, and are easily ready to pay 7 cents per package if their total amount for purchasing products is several tens of dollars.
On average, Americans use about 100 billion disposable packets per year.
The introduction of a similar tax in the District of Columbia led to a decrease in the level of use of packages in 2 times in the first 2 months of tax validity.
The new tax will not apply to restaurants, as well as to the centers for the issuance of products on coupons.
The authors project the bag tax will generate $12,9 million in 2017: $3,7 million to stores and $9,2 million to the city to administer it. The long-term goal of the project is not to raise money, but to reduce the consumption of bags.
In 2015, 900 of millions of packages were used in the city, 90% of which are polyethylene.
