The biologist who discovered a new species of parasitic worm named it in honor of US President Barack Obama - Baracktrema obamai. This was reported in an article published in a scientific publication Journal of Parasitology.

The author of the discovery is Thomas Platt, a professor at St. Mary’s College in Indiana. He is a distant relative of Obama. On the account of the scientist is already 32 new, open to them, the species. In the past, he called them in honor of his father-in-law, supervisor and other people, whom he treated with great respect, reports CBS News.

Naming a new species of worm in honor of Obama is an honor, not an attempt to insult the president, Platt assures. According to him, Baracktrema obamai’s appearance reminds him of the American leader: “It’s long, thin and damn cool.” In addition, the new species has phenomenal vitality, says the scientist.

Platt’s article states that this worm lives in the blood of turtles.

Scientists have discovered the accumulation of hundreds and thousands of parasite eggs in the pulmonary alveoli of two species of freshwater reptiles - the black freshwater turtle (Siebenrockiella crassicollis) and the Amboin hinged turtle (Cuora amboinensis), reports Popular Science.

According to the description, Baracktrema obamai has a long, filamentary body. It is unclear how it appears in the body of turtles and what effect it has on them. CBS News claims, with reference to biologists, that the new species is absolutely safe for reptiles, although it has to be related to another type of parasite that can cause serious illness in humans. Popular Science notes that, according to scientists, it is possible that Baracktrema obamai can cause a cough in turtles.

Earlier, a spider was named after Barack Obama, a fish and an extinct species of lizard. In addition, they tried to perpetuate the name of the current head of the White House by naming inanimate objects after him. Thus, in 2008, Mount Boggy, the highest point in the state of Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean, was renamed in his honor. A year later, croissants were named after Obama in Romania, cigars in Nicaragua, and mobile phones in Kenya. Obamawood coal recently appeared in Russia.

Although the name of a new species in honor of a person is usually a confirmation of the recognition of his merits, there have been cases when this was done with the aim of revenge, biologist and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Parasitology Michael Sukhdeo told reporters. So, according to him, after a divorce from her husband, one female biologist named a whole group of parasites in his honor Microphallus.
