In honor of Obama will call a new type of fish

Scientists from the Bishop Museum in Hawaii are going to name the newly discovered new species of fish that lives in the Pacific Ocean, in honor of US President Barack Obama. It is reported by National Geographic.

A new species was found on the Kure Atoll (one of the coral reefs) in the northern part of the islands. It is represented by golden-orange individuals, which are the only members of the Tosanoid subfamily in this region. It was previously believed that Tosanoids are found only in the territorial waters of Japan. In addition, the new species lives exclusively in the waters of the marine reserve Papakhanaumokukea in the Pacific Ocean.

The researchers decided to name the new species in honor of Obama in gratitude for the expansion of the reserve. In addition, they considered it a fortunate coincidence that the habitat features of the species are related to the part of the president’s biography (Obama was born in the state of Hawaii).

Obama himself in an interview with the magazine said that he considers it an honor to name the species in his honor. “Nice fish,” he remarked when the scientists presented him an image.

The President of the United States will expand the marine reserve in the Pacific Ocean, which will then become the largest conservation area in the world - its territory will be 1,5 million square kilometers.
