Shooting in Alabama church leaves dead

On June 16, two people were killed and one injured in a shooting at a small church meeting in a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. Writes about it CNN.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is in custody, said Capt. Shane Ware of the Westavia Hills Police Department. The survivor is in the hospital. The severity of his injuries is unknown.

The attack on members of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills took place during an event dubbed the Boomers Potluck, Reverend John Burruss said.

“This is painful for our entire church and society as a whole,” he said.

The shooting occurred on the eve of the seventh anniversary of the massacre at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

A mass shooting during a service at a Taiwanese church in Southern California, along with mass shootings at a Texas elementary school and a supermarket in New York, has brought more political attention to gun violence.

A bipartisan group of senators announced an agreement in principle on gun safety legislation that addresses issues of mental health, school safety and access to firearms.

"This shouldn't have happened"

According to Ware, agents from the FBI, the US Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives were dispatched to the scene following the Alabama church shooting. He urged anyone with more information to contact the Westavia Hills Police Department.

“We pray for healing and safety for all those affected,” said the Rev. Kelly Hadlow, clergy building missionary for the Diocese of Alabama.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey sent her condolences.

“I'm glad to hear the shooter is in custody,” Ivy said. “This shouldn't have happened—not in the church, not in the store, not in the city, not anywhere else. We continue to closely monitor the situation."
