“Dear Michelle, I was glad to receive your letter about trying to stop the Russians from bombing the North Pole and threatening the life of Santa Claus,” Kennedy wrote on October 28, 1961, as Cold War tensions flared between the two nuclear-armed countries. superpowers.
“I share your concerns about atmospheric testing in the Soviet Union, not only for the North Pole, but for countries around the world; not only for Santa Claus, but for people all over the world,” the president wrote.
