9 states will require passports for domestic flights in the US

We remind you that starting from 22 January 2018, residents of 9 US states may be denied the right to board the aircraft if they use their driver’s license as an identity card, reports "Travel + Leisure ». If you live in one of these states and plan to fly an internal flight, in the new year you may not be allowed on board.

Residents of Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Washington will have to use alternative forms of identity card (passport, military ID or permanent resident card) to pass through the TSA checkpoints even for domestic tourism.

The fact is that driving licenses in these 9 states do not meet minimum safety standards. And, in accordance with the REAL ID Act of 2005, federal agencies (such as the TSA) are prohibited from "accepting for certain purposes driver's licenses and identity cards of those states that do not meet the minimum security requirements."

Among the new requirements that most states failed to cope with are the following standards: when issuing a driver's license, the state must document the social security number, keep a digital copy of the application for rights; in addition, a driver's license must be protected by new safety signs.

Travelers who live in other states, these changes are not affected. But by 2020, all travelers must carry an ID that meets government security standards in order to pass through TSA checkpoints.

Currently, only 24 of the state, including Washington, DC, have a corresponding ID. The rest are either under review or have received a slight delay for the introduction of new requirements.

The REAL ID Act of 2005 was adopted in the 2005 year as one of the steps to tighten the requirements for identifying people after the September 11 2001 attacks. He puts more stringent requirements regarding the information provided for obtaining a driver's license, if they will be used as an ID at the state level.

Performers of the September 11 attacks had passport cards or driver's licenses issued in different states, so the FBI recommended that the US government unify the requirements for obtaining these documents in all states in order to increase the level of control over their issuance.

Beginning with 30 in January of 2017, federal agencies and nuclear power plants do not accept driver licenses and other regional certificates issued by states that did not receive a deferment on the introduction of new requirements for official purposes.

And since January 2018, a driver's license issued by states that have not adapted their standards to federal requirements will not give the right to land on airplanes.
