“I started a jihad to withdraw foreign forces from my country and establish an Islamic government, and the jihad will continue until we achieve this goal through a political agreement,” Hairkhwa said.

Taliban militants reported that after the capture of Kabul, they intend to return their leaders from Qatar.

One of the "co-founders" of the Taliban, Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, who was among the prisoners released by the Afghan government as a result of the peace agreement signed by the administration of President Donald Trump and the Taliban in February 2020, returned to Afghanistan for the first time in almost 20 years.

One Taliban member who said he was at Guantanamo Bay criticized the United States for "oppressing our people for 20 years."

Earlier this year, Khairhwa assured the administration that the Taliban would not launch a spring military offensive if Biden made a commitment to withdraw all remaining US troops from Afghanistan. He also pledged not to retaliate against Afghans who worked with the US military or the US-backed government in Kabul.

However, reports from Afghanistan show that the Taliban went door to door to identify and punish their enemies and people who collaborated with Westerners.

Obama freed Hayhwa and four other terrorists in exchange for the Taliban's release of US Army Sergeant Robert Bergdahl, who was captured after deserting his post in Afghanistan.

Obama glorified Bergdahl as a hero prisoner of war, but the soldier ended up facing a military tribunal and pleading guilty to desertion and misconduct in front of the enemy after his disappearance and capture became known.
