In 11 states, people have become infected with salmonella from sushi
According to the new report of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the widespread outbreak of Salmonella is partly due to the use of land. In eleven states, 62 people became ill.
The outbreak of the disease occurred through the fault of yellowfin tuna, which was caught in Indonesia and sold to Osamu Corporation. AFC Corporation bought some of the fish for sale in grocery stores.
“The majority of patients reported eating sushi made with raw tuna,” the CDC states. Osamu has voluntarily recalled its frozen tuna meat and AFC has withdrawn the product from all stores. Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said the outbreak highlights the need for "excellent surveillance... So that when it happens, we can minimize the impact."
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain, which can occur 12-72 hours after infection. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention advises pregnant women, the elderly, and people with a weakened immune system to avoid eating raw fish.
