The horrors of Airbnb: another couple died in Mexico
Spouses from New Orleans died from carbon monoxide poisoning in apartments rented through Airbnb in Mexico.
Prosecutors in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato told ABC News and the English-language newspaper Mexico News Daily that Edward Winders and Barbara Moller died of gas asphyxiation due to a malfunctioning heater in the San Miguel de Allende apartments.
The son of the family, Eric, said his father and stepmother devoted their lives to helping others.
Moller founded Paper to Pearls, an organization that helped Ugandan refugees make a living by making jewelery.
“This was the first program in refugee camps in Uganda to help them empower women,” Eric explained.
After a four-person Iowa family also died of gas asphyxiation in their rented apartments, it became clear that the responsibility for security ultimately resides with tenants.
An elderly couple decided to move to San Miguel de Allende to find a permanent place of residence there and continue to help those in need.
“They were mentors, they were heroes,” Eric said.
After the death of his relatives, Eric turned to Airbnb, demanding that he take steps to ensure the safety of the homes on the site.
“Airbnb is a leader in the hospitality and home rental industry, we would encourage them to create controls on their platform,” Eric said.
