'Horror, like in the movie' Jaws': in Florida, two people were attacked by sharks in a day

In one day, two people experienced shark attacks on two different beaches in Florida - both survived but suffered lacerations to their limbs. The latest incidents have raised new concerns about the safety of bathing and swimming on the state's beaches.

Witnesses to the incident in Jacksonville said the scene resembled footage from the movie “Jaws,” writes CBS News. Surfer Franklin O'Rourke says that these very shark jaws snapped closed on his arm.

His friend RJ Berger witnessed a terrible incident.

“The shark almost completely jumped out of the water. Her tail was thrashing the water,” he said.

About 100 miles (160 kilometers) away, another attack occurred the same day, this time in New Smyrna Beach, near Daytona Beach. Florida officials say a shark bit the leg of an Arizona man who was boogie surfing. The 49-year-old man suffered lacerations, but his health and life are now safe.

New Smyrna Beach is known as the "Shark Bite Capital of the World." Since the late 1800s, there have been more than 300 unprovoked shark attacks in Volusia County, where this beach is located. For comparison, since 1837, sharks have attacked people 162 times in the entire state of Hawaii, and 124 times in the entire state of California.

Meanwhile, just last week in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, 21 once recorded the presence of sharks. This summer, the beaches in this area have been closed for security more than once.

Fire Chief Anthony Pike works at Cape Cod to ensure the safety of the swimmers. He sets up emergency response kits for shark bites and warning signs for vacationers.

“I think we're going through a cultural change,” Pike responded. “Now is the moment when people need to realize the dangers of swimming in the ocean at this time of year.”

Marine biologist Stephen Khajur from the University of Florida at Boca Raton said that sharks usually attack if they mistakenly take a person for food.

“You get more shark bites in the summer just because there are more people in the water,” Kajura said. “I think most often the shark bites, then realizes: “Oh, you’re not a fish,” and lets the person go. But, of course, teeth marks remain.”

Experts say there are several ways to protect yourself from attack, such as avoiding swimming at night, dusk and dawn, when sharks are most active. In addition, try not to wear bright swimsuits or shiny jewelry, all of which can attract sharks.
