Hurricane Pamela could cause dangerous floods, mudflows and landslides in Texas and Oklahoma

Pamela regained the strength of the hurricane as her center approached the coast of Mexico on October 13, 2021.

The system is projected to land on the west-central coast of Mexico today in a life-threatening hurricane. Strong winds are expected in the hurricane warning area. Residents of the area should follow any advice from local authorities, NHC said.

Heavy rains associated with Pamela are expected to continue today in the Mexican states of Sinaloa and western Durango. This will pose a threat of significant and life-threatening flash floods and mudflows.

Heavy rain is expected today or Thursday in parts of central Texas and southeastern Oklahoma, associated with Pamela's residual events. This can lead to severe lightning and flooding in cities.

As of 09:00 UTC on 13 October, a hurricane warning from Bahia Tempehuaya to Esquinapa and a tropical storm warning north of Bahia Tempehuaya to Altata are in effect; south of Esquinapa to Cabo Corrientes and the Mari Islands.

At the time, the center of Hurricane Pamela was located about 130 km southwest of Mazatlan, Mexico. The system had a maximum sustained wind of 120 km / h, a minimum central pressure of 987 hPa and moved northeast at a speed of 22 km / h.

Faster north-east travel is expected later today.

Pamela's center is forecast to land in west-central Mexico within the hurricane warning zone this morning and move inland over western Mexico today.

The storm condition is expected to cause significant coastal flooding in areas with onshore winds near where Pamela's center lands in southwestern Mexico. Near the coast, the storm will be accompanied by large destructive waves.

Hurricane conditions are expected in the hurricane warning zone in a couple of hours, with tropical storm conditions continuing to spread over portions of the coast.

Until Thursday, October 14, the Mexican states of Sinaloa are expected to receive 100-200 mm of precipitation with isolated maximum amounts of 300 mm. These rains can cause significant and life-threatening flash floods and landslides.

In areas of central Texas and southeastern Oklahoma, precipitation ranges from 75 to 150 mm with isolated maximum amounts of 200 mm. This can lead to significant impacts from natural disasters and floods in cities.

The waves generated by Pamela will continue to affect the southern parts of the Baja California Peninsula, as well as the southwest and west-central parts of mainland Mexico, to this day.
