Ukrainian startup entered the world top twenty

Kievans Andrei Seleznev and Marina Kuzmenko made a mobile application with clever recommendationmi and estimates for the care of plants.

The idea to use the camera of the phone to measure the leaf area of ​​a plant they had as a result of the search for a solution to estimate the 2500 area of ​​poplar leaves. The first audience of Petiole were environmental scientists who needed to conduct experiments with leaf area.

Then the developers talked to the farmers and realized that they were also interested in the application. The dynamics of plant development during the growing season determines its ability to survive and give a good harvest. Farmers made an assessment on the eye and made gross mistakes when making decisions.

And thanks to Petiole, it became possible to digitize the dynamics of the development of a plant using a camera on a smartphone. This in turn allowed farmers to conduct more experiments and get feedback faster.

Kievans have applied for participation in an open competition Startup Open in the United States. Their questionnaire got into 50 selected from 800 in the second stage. And CNBC out of these 50 applications made 20 rating of the world's hottest startups in 2015 a year, calling the twenty “the brightest ideas on the planet”.

Seleznev and Kuzmenko themselves finance their project without attracting investment. They live and work in Kiev, they are engaged in their favorite business in the 24 / 7 mode. At one time, they got to the two-week program from Founders Space, but could not take part in it, because the US Embassy refused them a visa. But this Petiole did not stop. And now - the first victory.
