Ukraine has received the status of a partner of NATO enhanced capabilities: what does it mean

On Friday, June 12, 2020, the North Atlantic Council recognized Ukraine as an enhanced capacity partner, according to NATO official website.

This designation is part of NATO's Interoperability Initiative, which aims to maintain and deepen cooperation among Allies and partners that have made significant contributions to NATO-led operations and missions.

As a NATO partner, Ukraine has provided troops for Allied operations, including in Afghanistan and Kosovo, as well as for the NATO Response Force and exercises.

The Allies greatly appreciate this significant contribution, which demonstrates Ukraine’s commitment to Euro-Atlantic security, the website notes.

As a partner in advanced capabilities, Ukraine will benefit from specially designed features, including enhanced access to interoperability programs and exercises, as well as a wider exchange of information.

“This decision recognizes Ukraine’s significant contribution to NATO missions and demonstrates the Alliance’s continued commitment to its partners despite the COVID-19 pandemic,” NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said.

Ukraine is now one of six partners in expanded opportunities along with Australia, Finland, Georgia, Jordan and Sweden. Each of the partners has an individual relationship with NATO, based on areas of activity of mutual interest.

The status of Ukraine as a partner in advanced opportunities does not predetermine any decisions regarding membership in the Alliance.

NATO Allies continue to encourage and support Ukraine in its reform efforts, including in the areas of security and defense, in relation to civilian control and democratic control, as well as in the fight against corruption, according to the official website of the Alliance.
